From One Birthday Video to Millions: The Rise of a Global Video Gift Platform

VidDay company team picture.

Ten years ago, it started with a simple birthday video for a friend.

Nothing fancy — just a few clips from people who loved him, stitched together with heart. But when he watched it, he cried. Not the polite kind of tear-up. Full-on, shoulders-shaking, happy sobbing. And then he said something I’ll never forget:

“This is the best gift I’ve ever received.”

That single moment changed everything. And unknowingly, it sparked the beginning of VidDay — a platform built to help people celebrate each other in a meaningful way, no editing skills required.

Fast forward to today, and VidDay has become a global video gifting platform used in over 180 countries, creating millions of memories for birthdays, weddings, retirements, memorials, graduations — you name it.

As the Free Press recently put it in a feature article, VidDay is bringing digital gifts with real-life joy.  Their words captured what drives us: building meaningful ways for people everywhere to celebrate life’s moments.

We’ve had videos shared at the top of mountains, across military bases, and even one that made its way to the International Space Station. 🚀

Bootstrapped, Purpose-Driven, and Built with Heart

VidDay began as a side project, built not with venture capital or massive ad budgets, but with emotion.

From day one, we’ve stayed proudly bootstrapped and independent, growing quietly with a small but mighty Franco-Manitoban team. That freedom let us focus on what matters most: making it effortless to share love, gratitude, and memories in one surprise video that feels like a true gift.

Over the past decade, we’ve planted 100,000 trees, helped millions celebrate life’s biggest moments together (even from afar), and expanded with VideoGreet and CineGreet — putting your messages on gifts and even movie screens.

We also launched VidDay Greetings: one-to-one video eCards with the option to add a gift card.

And we’re not slowing down. We’ve just rolled out a wave of new tools and upgrades — discover 10 must-try new VidDay features.

Why It Still Matters Today

In a world where everything moves fast, we created VidDay to slow things down — even if only for a few minutes. To give people a way to say, “You matter. I’m thinking of you.”  That mission feels more meaningful today than ever.

VidDay isn’t just for birthdays — people are using it to celebrate all kinds of milestones:

And in a world full of waste and overconsumption, VidDay offers something different — a gift that doesn’t end up in a landfill.

VidDay's video maker for birthdays, farewells, graduations, and more. Easily collect video messages from friends and family into a surprise video gift.

It’s not about what you buy. It’s about who you have in your life. VidDay helps people celebrate that — love, connection, and shared memories.

We believe the most meaningful gifts aren’t things. They’re moments. And VidDay creates and captures those moments forever.

And that’s also why we’ve always made our Get Well videos completely free — because support and kindness shouldn’t come with a price tag.

A Big Thank You From the VidDay Team 💚

None of this happens without you.

Every birthday surprise, every retirement tribute, every “just because” video you’ve created has fueled us to keep building, dreaming, and celebrating.

You’ve trusted us with life’s biggest (and smallest) moments—and that means everything.

Thanks for letting us be part of your milestones, for cheering us on, and for spreading the word. You’re the reason VidDay exists, and the reason we get to do what we love every day.

Here’s to the next million smiles—together. 🥂

What’s Next for VidDay?

We’re just getting started.

We’re investing in new tools to make video creation even easier — including AI-powered features, personalized themes, and custom song gifts.

We're rolling out tangible keepsakes, such as Videobooks, and creating more ways for people to connect in meaningful, lasting ways.

We also recently launched our Wedding Digital Guestbook — a modern way for couples to collect video messages from guests before, during, or after their big day. It's a beautiful keepsake that goes beyond signatures in a book — capturing memories, well wishes, and surprise moments from loved ones near and far.

And yes — we’re still bootstrapped. Still independent. Still building with heart.

If you’ve ever used VidDay — thank you. You’re part of this journey.

If you haven’t yet… now’s a good time to try it. Maybe it’ll just be another video. Or maybe — like it did for us 10 years ago — it’ll spark something much bigger.

Because one simple message, one shared memory, can start a movement.
